Eva Mills

I am a theatre artist, director, actor and musician living and working on Djirringanj country, in the Bega Valley, NSW. My work is driven by a desire to create meaningful, connecting and thought provoking experiences within and for community.

I love stories! Especially ones that sit in the cracks, where we’re not sure whether to laugh or cry, where humour, grief, memory and joy coexist. I think these are the stories that mirror our own lives and these are the ones we have the most capacity to connect to and learn from. I love the wild and weird and am excited by out-of-the-box ideas. I love the start of a project, where all the possibilities and potential for creation float in readiness calling ‘pick me!’ And I especially love the moments that none of us saw coming - the ideas that have a mind of their own and infiltrate our creating and unapologetically steer and change it’s course.

Through collaboration and a strong ensemble approach, I seek to make theatre that is rigorous, imaginative and human-centred. I lean into techniques that help us find embodiment and emotional truth - as audience, participants and performers. I have studied Meisner theories of acting, and vocal improvisation, and I use these tools in my creating. I lean on my skills and experience as an actor and musician and dancer to meld story and sound and performance in my work.

I’m particularly interested in developing new Australian work and creating ambitious, intimate performance experiences in regional contexts. At the heart of this is a desire to make work that is honest, resonant, and quietly transformative.
